Scholarship Applications Frequently Asked Questions


  1. What types of scholarships are available?

There are two types of scholarships: Youth (for individuals 24 and under) and General (for individuals 25 and above).

  1. How many scholarships are awarded?

There are a total 5 full scholarships and 10 partial scholarships available.

  1. What do the scholarships include?

The full scholarship covers registration, accommodations in a shared room and all meals for the duration of the retreat. The partial scholarship covers ½ of registration, accommodations in a shared room and meals for the duration of the retreat. You would pay the other ½ ($125).

  1. Is travel included in the scholarship?

Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to support travel costs. We encourage you to fundraise within your communities to support your travel. Here are some ideas for fundraising to attend the retreat.

  1. Do I need to register and pay a deposit if I’m applying for a scholarship?

No, you do not need to register or pay a deposit at this time.

  1. Who is prioritized for the scholarship?

  • Young people

  • People of color

  • Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals

  • Women

  • Disabled/differently abled persons

  • Elders

  • Individuals coming from the West Coast

  • Individuals who have not attended before

  • Individuals who have applied before but not received a scholarship

  1. Who reads and evaluates my scholarship application?

The applications will be read and evaluated by a scholarship evaluation committee comprised of 4 LGBT Muslims who have attended the retreat before and who are part of the retreat planning committee.

  1. How is my scholarship evaluated?

    Evaluation criteria include the following elements:

  • Aspiration to attend the LGBT Muslim Retreat

  • Financial need

  • Geographical location

  • How attending the retreat will help the applicant in their journey as an LGBT Muslim

  • Involvement with social justice, LGBT, and/or Muslim organizations

  1. I am applying from outside the United States. Am I eligible?

Yes, you are eligible to apply, but priority is given to individuals living in the US. In the past we have awarded scholarships to international participants but most were not able to secure a visa to come. We encourage you to seek alternative sources of funding for the retreat.


  1. I’m not sure if I can attend the retreat. Should I still apply for a scholarship?

Yes, you should still apply. If you receive a scholarship and cannot attend, you must notify us by September 25th, 2017. If you do not notify us by this date, you will be liable for the cost of the scholarship.

  1. Will there be an interview for scholarship applicants?

Yes, scholarship applicants must be available for a telephone or internet chat interview between the dates of August 4th ~ 28th, 2017. An exact date and time for an interview will be determined.

  1. What format should I submit my scholarship application in?

    Your application can be submitted in a .doc or PDF format. You must save your    file as:   Your First Name Your Last Name  –  General Scholarship Application   
    or Your First Name Your Last Name  –  Youth Scholarship Application  

    Example:  Aisha Khan – General Scholarship Application

  1. When is the scholarship application due?

  1. When will I be notified if I am awarded a scholarship?  

Friday, August 4th, 2017  

  1. How long do I have to accept the scholarship and confirm my attendance to the retreat?  

You have until Friday, September 1st, 2017 to accept the scholarship and confirm your attendance.

  1. I received a scholarship, but now I can’t come. What should I do?

You must notify us by email ( by September 25th, 2017 if you cannot attend. If you do not notify us by this date, you will be liable for the cost of the scholarship.

  1. I have more questions. Is there someone I can talk to over the phone?
